What Does it Mean to "Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus"?

Mark 8:34-38

1.  The Language that is used by Jesus    v.34
      a.  The language was symbolic.
      b.  The language was serious.

2.  The Lessons that are taught by Jesus    v.34
      a.  He calls us to a world of selflessness.
           Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself,
      b.  He calls us to a way of sacrifice.
           ...let him...take up his cross,
      c.  He calls us to a walk of submission.
           Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

3.  The Loyalty that is expected by Jesus    v.38
      a.  Characterized by a clear focus:
           me and...my words
      b.  Characterized by a conspicuous faithfulness:
           ...in this adulterous and sinful generation

4.  The Life that is promised by Jesus    vv.35-37
      a.  There is nothing you can gain in this life that is worth losing your soul.
      b.  There is nothing you can lose in this life that is as valuable as what you shall gain in Jesus Christ.
